Prompt: Answer the following exam question and support your interpretation with evidence gained from a close reading analysis of the texts(s). Be sure to mention the author’s use of literary devices such as imagery, metaphor, irony, and symbol. Your final exam essay should be a multi-paragraph essay with an introduction and a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your essay should include quotations and follow the conventions of standard English grammar and usage, as well as MLA in-text citation rules for quotations. In “Digging,” by Seamus Heaney, and “For Saundra,” by Nikki Giovani, the poets seem to reach the opposite conclusion: Heaney decides to write, but Giovani wonders about not writing. How does the speaker of each poem arrive at his/her conclusion, and which conclusion do you find more persuasive? And now, how to write the final exam: 1) Remember that this is an open-note exam, so you can refer to the PowerPoint slide presentations, video lectures, AND your poetry HW assignment, which has explanations of all the literary elements (also called devices, tools, ingredients, or terms). You also can (and should) use a dictionary / thesaurus. I recommend the Merriam Webster online dictionary and thesaurus. 2) If the set of writing directions (also called the prompt) invites you to discuss literary elements in your essay, you should do so. One of the objectives of ENG 111 is knowing about the literary elements, so the final exam is the best place for you to demonstrate that you have acquired or are acquiring this knowledge. Again, remember that you can refer to the explanations of the literary elements that I provided in your poetry HW assignment. If the writing prompt lists some of the literary elements, those are just suggestions or examples. You do not have to write about all of the elements in that list, nor are you limited to only the elements in that list. 3) YOUR ESSAY MUST HAVE A CLEAR THESIS STATEMENT. THE WRITING PROMPT WILL ASK YOU A SPECIFIC QUESTION ABOUT THE TWO POEMS. YOUR ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WILL BE YOUR THESIS STATEMENT. For each of your first two essays, on “Oedipus the King” and The Odyssey, I asked you a specific question. In each case, your thesis statement was your answer to my question. For your research paper on Song of Solomon, your assignment was to devise your own research question and find the answer to it. Your own answer to your own question was supposed to be the thesis statement for that paper. For your most recent essay on poetry and mortality, you were completely free to come up with your own thesis statement. In this sense, the final exam is more like the first two essays that you wrote earlier in the semester. In my opinion, this is easier. The English Department will ask you a specific question about the two poems, and your answer to that question will be your thesis statement. The traditional location of the thesis statement is at the end of the first paragraph, following a more general introduction. So, your task will be to answer that question and support your answer in a complete essay with examples from both poems and also, maybe, to incorporate some discussion of the literary elements that you see at work in each poem. 4) Another objective of ENG 111 is knowing about MLA standards. Be sure to cite all of your references to the two poems with the authors’ names in parentheses. Also, include a Works Cited list at the end, as you did with your research paper. This will be a short list–just two works, but why not show the English Department that you know how to do it? The English Department has provided you with all of the information that you need to include in your Works Cited list. Just be sure to alphabetize the poets’ last names. 5) VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT CHEAT!!! This is an open-note test, but it is not an open-internet test. If you copy and paste from the internet (or copy from a book or anywhere else), you will get caught, because your paper will be coming in through SafeAssign, a very effective anti-plagiarism program. Your writing on the final exam does not need to be perfect, but it absolutely does have to be your own writing. use these video for more info on the sources https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDNy4zgmRQo&feature=emb_title https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-UUUv4hQBE&feature=emb_title
