Based on what you have learned, how would you describe your family’s descent system? Is it patrilineal, matrilineal or bilateral? Be sure to explain your answer. You may either write about your family or a family that you know (be sure to indicate who you are writing about). Be sure to cite textbook page number when clarifying the type of family you are from or currently live in. Develop a kinship diagram for your family and be sure to label your kin (you can do this for your family or a family you know). Please include three generations (You could do your parents or grandparents or you could do your parents and your children). You can do this in word but some students use various family tree templates that are available online. Explain which kinship systems best describes your family and why your family is this system (please note that kinship SYSTEMS include Iroquois, Eskimo, etc). Be sure to review this part of your book and explain what best describes your family. Choose two indigenous peoples from the tutorial (See ethnographic examples). You do not have to go outside this tutorial to do this assignment. How is lineage passed? Are the two groups you chose similar or different? What type of marriage system do they have? Are the two groups you chose similar or different? What is their pattern of residence? Are the two groups you chose similar or different? After reading these two chapters and reviewing the tutorial, what surprised you the most about kinship? Explain. Why do you think it is important to understand nature of kinship and family when working with other cultures? Explain. Write at least a 10 sentence answer to this question.
