Ethnic reflection paper

As the term comes to an end, you are in a position to look back at your learning in this course. This final summative, reflective essay is intended to give you the opportunity to reflect on the course as a whole and how your learning contributes to the liberal arts core of your education.

It may be useful to imagine this as a letter to your “future self” – reminding you of some fundamental ideas or philosophical habits of mind that you may have come to appreciate.

Length: 2-3 pages, double spaced.

Process: There are a number of ways of approaching this task; here are some suggestions:

1. It is well known that we actually learn much more through correcting our errors than by getting it “right” the first time through. When you look at yourself as a learner in this class, what were your attitudes/assumptions that you had to revise or moments when you needed to change your way of reading or studying – that actually contributed to your success in this course? In addition, this course is a reading and writing enhanced course. What have you learned about your process of reading closely or writing and revising that you found to as an intrinsic value? Are there any habits of mind or your approach learning that enabled you to tackle the difficult tasks associated with learning philosophical reasoning and inquiry?

2. One way of thinking of your General Education is to think of it in terms of how it is one way to distinguish you as a professional. Your technical skills in your major are important to master, of course! But your employer wants more than a technician; they will look to you to excel at learning new materials, embracing a strong work ethic and present yourself as a person of good character. The degree to which you embrace the challenges associated with a course such as this one may be an indication of the measure of your success in the future. For example, you were asked to read fewer than sixty pages of text. There were parts that were difficult, for sure, but not insurmountable. Did you resist the temptation to “outsource” your own reflection by actually wresting with this difficulty? As you reflect on the first half of the course, what was your commitment to your learning? After break, a unique educational challenge was introduced for us all; so what about your ongoing commitment to your learning? Did you have the habits and fortitude to carry you through the challenges? What sorts of habits and strengths did you discover that will serve you well when you enter your chosen profession? Did you learn something about yourself as you cope with change that you will continue to value in the future?
