Question 1 (7 Marks)
Heinberg (2010) defines sustainability as operating in a way that does not take more resources from the earth than the earth can re-plenish and that does not put more waste into the earth’s system than the earth can absorb.
Drawing on the McKibben article assigned in Week 11 (‘How extreme weather is shrinking the planet’) clearly and fully explain how climate change can be seen as an example of “unsustainability” and describe some of the consequences of climate change for people, communities and animals, as listed in the article. (3 marks)
Drawing on the Nicholson et al. (2017), explain the notion of “kaitiakitanga” and explain what kaitiakitanga requires of companies in the fossil fuel industry. (4 marks)

Drawing on the Andrew Ghillyer article assigned in Week 10 (‘Management without conscience’) clearly and fully explain the key differences between the instrumental view and the modern social contract approach to social responsibility. (3 marks)
Explain whether the actions of the fossil fuel industry, as summarised in the McKibben article assigned in Week 11 (‘How extreme weather is shrinking the planet’) align with the instrumental or the social contract approach. (4 marks)
Do you personally consider that the fossil fuel industry has acted responsibly in its response to climate change? Explain your answer. (3 marks)

Drawing on the Kate Raworth TED Talk assigned for Week 7 (A healthy economy should be designed to thrive, not grow)* explain why Raworth believes that unending economic growth is an inappropriate goal for human societies. Do you agree with her? (4 marks)
Referring to the Wakatū Case Study (‘What business can learn from Wakatū Incorporation’) and the Wakatū website (www.wakatu.org), explain how Wakatū is operating in a way that takes into account both the “social foundation” and the “economic ceiling” as set out in Raworth’s model. Use examples to illustrate your answer. (4 marks)

Considering your own generation of plastic waste and drawing on the “systems iceberg model” from Week 8, explain how some of the “underlying structures” and “mental models” would need to change in order to support Freeman’s proposed ‘new story’. (3 marks)
Referring to the Wakatū Case Study (‘What business can learn from Wakatū Incorporation’) and the Wakatū website (www.wakatu.org), explain how Wakatū is creating value for multiple stakeholders. Use examples to illustrate your answer. (4 marks)
