In light of your reading of “From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hos,” examine the lyrics of several female rappers and compare them to those of the male rappers Morgan mentions. What similarities and differences do you find in the subjects they address and the feelings they express? Also, keep in mind that “From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hos” was written twenty years ago…have attitudes and subject matter in rap/hip-hop changed in those twenty years, or is it more of the same of what Joan Morgan describes in her writing? Respond in a formal essay that ARGUES something specific about the world of hip-hop/rap and its attitudes, lyrics, and views toward and from women. I won’t formally assign this reading to you, but another view that is similar to Morgan’s can be found in the article “Rap Artists’ Use of Women” (Links:https://ransomfellowship.org/article/rap-artists-use-of-women/) by Luke Bobo, a minister who wrote on the topic in 2008. You might compare his view to Morgan’s in your paper, or otherwise use his viewpoint for more material to quote from, analyze, and comment upon. Further, do a little online reading about jazz in the 1920s and how it was controversial to many, and discuss that within your presentation as well. A brief primer on how/why some 1920s music could be controversial can be found here (Links:https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/cultureshock/beyond/jazz.html.)…I leave it up to you to do further reading on the topic elsewhere. You likely won’t find too much within the novel of The Great Gatsby to quote from, but make sure to include some mention of 1920s music and its controversy as part of your presentation, perhaps simply as a framing device.

a. Have a clear thesis the paper supports throughout…the message that makes your discussion matter to a reader who does not know you. Don’t let your paper simply be rambling facts and summary…it should be working toward proving a point you wish make!
b. Include descriptive, specific details throughout whenever possible to give more life and realism to your discussion
c. Give quotes from your source material for support/illustration…do not assume that the reader knows anything about the articles you are using, or the novel…you have to provide adequate context and integration of this material, without exploiting this and using unnecessary summarization to bulk up your paper.
d. Make sure things are grammatically and logically flowing. A LOT of you are turning in papers that are clearly not proofread at all. All those little red, green, and blue lines that Word puts under your work are not for decoration! Not that relying on a machine to point out your issues is ideal, either, but many of you are clearly not even going that far with editing and proofreading!
