Hi, all!
Welcome to our week 10 lecture and discussion activity. I hope you are all doing well.
For this week’s lesson, just follow the instructions below.
Prof. Davis
Start watching today’s Zoom lecture on Essay #3, Ngugi, and James Baldwin. (链接到外部网站。) When asked to pause, do so, and return to this discussion to read Baldwin’s essay on black English.
Read James Baldwin’s “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?” (链接到外部网站。) (note that within the article, “Provenal” is meant to read “Provençal,” but due to an encoding issue, displays incorrectly). Once you are done reading the essay, finish watching our Zoom lecture.
Once you have finished watching the Zoom lecture, complete the discussion assignment below. Enjoy!
Discussion instructions: Read through the questions below. Choose three questions to which you’ll respond. Post your responses as a reply to this discussion thread. Then, read through your peers’ responses, choosing at least one to which you will respond.
How does Baldwin’s discussion of Black English clarify your understanding of Ngugi’s text?
Baldwin posits that “a language comes into existence by means of brutal necessity, and the rules of the language are dictated by what the language must convey.” What does he mean? Can you think of an example?
Are there parts of Baldwin’s essay that you don’t understand? What is the source of this lack of understanding? Does the challenge of understanding Baldwin prove his thesis? Explain.
Previously, we have discussed the evolution of languages as a process that involves people but one that operates largely transparently to the people who are party to that evolution. Baldwin, on the other hand, argues that “people evolve a language,” thus inferring an agency, even an intentionality, on the part of the people involved in language’s evolution. Do you agree with Baldwin? How does Baldwin’s emphasis on the intentionality of language evolution, as a sort of teleological argument, connect to your planned discussion of authenticity in African literature?
