IPTF19 GENERAL ESSAY SET #1
In this class you are free to write in a voice that you think is reasonable, and with reference to a context where you think our content matters. You can say “I,” and use whatever language would be appropriate if you were speaking to… whomever you choose. Everyone should determine who their audience is when they write.
• Who would you like to discuss these matters with?
• Who needs woke up?
• Who would try to argue with you?
• Who needs to understand something?
• How does our material fit in with discussions you’ve already been having?
Consider writing to your classmates, or to your family, or to workmates or a neighbor or a close friend. In reading what you write I will try to pretend to be that person, and will comment on what you say based on what seems understandable from that perspective.
*The first paragraph of every response should explain whom you are writing to, what that means, why they would care, what your intention is in talking with them…
Choose and answer three of the prompts listed below. Include the prompt at the top of your response. So your format should be:
• Prompt
• Paragraph explaining who you are writing to and why.
• Response to every aspect of the prompt, with at least two direct quotations from assigned reading
*All responses must include at least two direct and exact quotations, from the reading we’ve dealt with in our class, with citation like this: (Author, p. #)
1. Given what we have read so far, what would you say are the key types or key features of “power”? Define or describe each type or each aspect, with reference to and quotation from our readings. Where in your own experience do you see these types or aspects operating? Try to be as concrete as possible. To what degree or in what way do you think the power that surrounds you is a problem?
2. Define “ideology.” What instances of ideology are apparent in our immediate world? Who makes it, distributes it, profits from it? What effects are produced through its distribution and internalization? What do you think people would need to do in order to reduce or remove the effects of such ideology?
3. Define “state power,” citing more than one of our texts. Then say what seem to be the most extreme positions with respect to state power. What, for you, is the key question about state power? How might you begin to answer your question? Explain.
