1) Interpret the continuity between these two quotes:
Oedipus: “My children/ I pity you. I see–how could I fail to see/ what longings bring you here? Well I know/ you are sick to death, all of you,/ but sick as you are, not one is sick as I” (162).
Creon: “Apollo commands us–he was quite clear–‘Drive the corruption from the land,/ don’t harbor it any longer, past all cure,/ don’t nurse it in your soil–root it out!'” (164).
2) Choose a passage that stood out to you, and analyze its meaning in the context of the drama.

101A—Essay#2
Due: 5/6/20–15:00 pm. PST.
Analytic, Argumentative Essay:
For this essay, analyze the underlying meaning of Sophocles’ “Oedipus the King,” based on recent course readings. Specifically, drawing from the lecture on Oedipus, what is the tragic dimension of this story, as related to concepts we have covered. For instance, in terms of the analysis of the emotions, those of Kahneman, of McRaney, of Emerson, etc., what connection do you see between the theoretical material and the story.
In terms of the structure, first explain the tragic aspect/thematic of the story that you will examine–as gathered from the lecture. Then, present the concept from the course readings that displays and exemplifies this tragic thematic. Finally, connect this idea/issue to the story and analyze how it manifests in this narrative concretely.
This essay needs to follow the traditional analytic template. You need to have an introduction that will state the article’s name, the author, the particular issues of each body paragraph. Then, in terms of the body, the first sentence should introduce the topic, the second should introduce the quote, next implement the actual quote, follow that by an in-depth explanation of the meaning of the quote/why it is significant as a concept, and finally transition to the next proposition. Be sure to have a conclusion as well. Failure to follow this structure will drop your score by 1 full grade.
