Stephen is an accountant. He is blind and has the assistance of a guide dog. He applied for a job at the company’s headquarters but did not get the position. His rejection letter stated that he was an excellent candidate but that the office could not accommodate his dog.
Ghada is a chef. She wears a hijab. She went for an interview to work in the kitchen of one of the hotels. At the start of the interview Ghada was asked if she was a practicing Muslim and when she confirmed that she was, the interviewer questioned her on whether she supported the practice of halal slaughter as a number of kitchen staff objected to this. Following the interview Ghada was not offered the job.
Pavel applied for the manager’s job at a new hotel but he was concerned that the job specification stated that applicants needed have a degree in Hotel Management and passes in GCSE English and Maths. Pavel was educated in Poland. He has the required degree but he does not have any GCSEs. Pavel was not shortlisted.
Louise works in a bar in one of the hotels. She considers that she has received inappropriate comments from colleagues. A male member of staff has suggested that she wear low cut tops and another keeps asking her if she likes the cocktail ‘sex on the beach’ because he does. Her line manager has shown no support when she has raised this as an issue.
