Educational Synopsis and Informative Infographic
Choose a sports nutrition topic in which to write an educational synopsis of the research and create an informative infograph for athletes or clients. Examples: tart cherry juice uses, foods that impact inflammation, strategies to stay hydrated in various climates, nutrients for concussion, disordered eating topics (low energy availability, orthorexia, etc). This is your chance to write a detailed synopsis and create an infograph on a nutrition topic that interests you or that you would like to know more about.
Written Narrative
Review the current literature of the topic and choose 3-5 resources (peer reviewed journal articles, article topics found on the Gatorade SSI website, books etc.) in which the information will be conveyed in a written synopsis on the topic and displayed educationally in the infograph.
Write a 1-2 page detailed synopsis of your nutrition topic and include a reference page. This synopsis will educate the reader on the science behind the information contained in the infograph and inform them on how it impacts athlete nutrition, health and/or performance.
References should be properly cited in the narrative and students should provide a reference page on a separate page from your narrative. Note points will be deducted for spelling, grammar, and improper citations. Tip, review the synopsis before submission. Consider reading the synopsis out loud as if giving a team talk to athletes or clients to educate them on your topic prior to submission.
*Resources also must be cited at the bottom of your infograph in a reference section. Once you create your reference page for the synopsis, I recommend copy and paste to the bottom of the infograph. Size 8 or 9 font is acceptable for this reference box.
Infographic
In the sports nutrition setting, infographs are very useful as educational handouts, teaching visuals during team talks, education on team social media pages or posters placed in highly visible areas in locker rooms, sports medicine clinics, and weight rooms as a few examples.
Students may utilize Microsoft Powerpoint/Word, Adobe or an Infographic Creator to design the infograph. The infograph must be saved in jpeg, pdf, word or powerpoint format.
**You may not recreate someone else’s infograph or submit a previously created infograph. This must be a new infograph created by you.
Students can make it colorful, attractive, and attention grabbing of the information contained within the infograph with colors, graphics, pictures, shapes etc.
*Free Infograph creator resources: www.canva.com or www.piktochart.com You can typically save in jpeg format once you have created your infograph.
Ensure to include your references in a small block at the bottom of your infograph as outlined above.
Educational things to consider answering on your infographic educational handout/slide:
• How much? What is the recommended amount per research and how often should it be taken, consumed or utilized?
• Pros/Cons associated with the nutrient in your topic.
• How to use or consume if it is a nutrient. (Make a smoothie, mix in Gatorade?)
• What foods may offer this nutrient? You may choose to highlight how much of this nutrient each
food item contains.
• Impacts to health or performance?
• Are there any safety concerns?
• Signs and symptoms of a health related topic.
• Describe how this information is beneficial to the athlete. Why should they do this, eat this or be
aware of this?
*These are just a few ideas to think about when putting your information together. You may choose a few of these or have other ideas based on the type of nutrition topic.
