Step 1.
You will complete an observation of a classroom watching several licensed child development centers and different videos of children playing. You should select at least 2-5 videos equalling at least 30 minutes. The videos must contain children between the ages of 2 and 5 years. You must also complete another observation of 30 minutes watching another child (a son/daughter, niece/ nephew/ friend). If you do not have access to a child please watch an additional ½ hour of children playing in the videos provided. (These are very different times- if you need to use memories of past classroom visits or a child that is younger or older- please just do your very best)
During the observation you will collect data in the following areas:
You will identify and assess for quality the curriculum you see in the
classroom
You will identify and assess for quality any teaching strategies you observe
You will consider whether the classroom is inclusive of all children and their
families.
For children being observed in a home setting:
1.) Provide a multitude of toys, safe kitchen tools, and other safe items i.e. hangers, boxes, old clothes
2.) Observe and document what the child chooses, what he/ she does with it/ what are their reactions?
3.) Add toys and take away, what reactions are they having now?
Prior to your observation, you will need to create an observation worksheet that contains the questions below. You should leave spaces on the worksheet so that you can fill in your responses during your observation. Make sure to save it, as you will need to turn it in with your final paper.

Curriculum – look around to see if you can find the following (Can be used from memory)
Do you see a lesson plan for the day? Copy the daily lesson plan if you can. If
you don’t see a plan, do you see anything telling the parents what the focus is
for the day/week?
Do you see a daily schedule posted? Copy it if you can.
Can you see child created work that obviously required planning on the
teacher’s part? Describe what you see and identify what you think the teacher’s intention was in offering the children these activities. What did they
hope the children would learn?
Were the activities or child created work focused on one curriculum content
area, or can you see a logical overlap between multiple areas? For example,
did an activity focus on math or was there also language arts involved in the
same activity?
Can you identify how the five selves have been supported in the previously
completed curriculum you see, or in the actual activities occurring on the day you observe? Describe and explain for each self in detail and with clear
examples of what you saw.
Can you identify a theme in the room? Was it integrated throughout the room
and the activities?
Summarize what you learned about curriculum planning in this classroom,
analyze whether you believe the teacher would be considered intentional, and if the activities were supportive of the 5 selves.
What advice would you give the teacher if you were their supervisor
regarding their approach to curriculum planning?
Teaching Strategies – now take time observing the teacher and children
Describe the teacher-directed experiences that occurred during your
observation. What explicit / direct teaching did you see? What did the teacher model or demonstrate? Did the children stay actively engaged during
this time?
Describe instances when the teacher engaged in positive feedback and
acknowledgement of the child’s ability, and ways in which the teacher
scaffolded an activity for the children. What did the teacher say/do?
Describe the child-directed experiences (center time, free time, outdoor
time). What opportunities and for how long were they allowed to explore for
themselves and engage with objects or other children?
Determine how well this learning environment provided the children with
opportunities and material from which they could learn for themselves. What would you recommend to this teacher regarding the balance of teacher directed to child-directed activities in the room?
Inclusiveness
What do you see / hear that indicates that the classroom and teacher is
inclusive of all children and their families? If you did not see anything, what would you recommend to the teacher?
Step 2. Typed observation report
Using the format from your worksheet, you will generate a typed report.
You have two choices:
You can provide a separate answer to each question asked. Please start out by typing the heading in the middle of the previous page (with your name, date, the name and address of the center, etc.) and then type your report by first typing the number of the question
