2. Historically, several factors have discouraged officers from making arrests in domestic violence situations. In your opinion, which do you feel is the most influential factor, and why?

2a. response to this agree or disagree. I absolutely despise going to about 90 percent of domestic violence calls that I am disptached to. This is mainly because when I get on scene I am usually told “he loves me, he didn’t mean to hit me” or after I make an arrest the victim comes to court and says the offender has changed, even though we had been to other domestic calls involving them since the arrest. One of the first domestic calls I ever went on, I got there and asked what happend, the female said “I busted his head wide f****** open with a brick!” and they expect me to side with them on not making an arrest?? Often, the reason we make an arrest is to allow the victim a way out of the situation since the hardest part of getting out of an abusive relationship is getting away. I also can’t stand to see kids in the middle of the situation. If I go to a domestic call and a child is crying, one of the first people I talk to is the child because they will normally tell me what really happened. I do have extreme respect for parents that try to stay together just for the sake of their children, but there also comes a time that one has to realize it isn’t going to work. I also understand that siblings fight and if at all possible, I won’t arrest for a sibling fight, When siblings fight or if I can tell people really don’t want to press the issue, I will go to them and tell them to tell me either to do my job or tell me to get lost, but don’t stand there and try to lie about what happened when I can clearly see marks on a face or arms.
Finally, I will help anybody once or twice, but if they continue to go back I’m not going to continue to arrest the offender if the victim keeps running back to them or bonds them out of jail.
