This week’s discussion forum is related to the workplace during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For this discussion forum, you are to research and then discuss an issue that an HR practitioner may have to consider during the pandemic. Your post must be an original contribution. In order to avoid duplication, you can choose the same overall topic as another student but must take a different perspective (not necessarily contrary). You must also cite different sources from each other. Remember, you may reply to another student’s post instead of creating a new post. Refer to “Introduction to Discussion Forums and Posting” for further instructions and see the grading rubric.

Here are some examples of topics you may want to consider:

-Employment contracts before, during, and after the pandemic
-Obligations of the employer
-Force majure clauses, frustration, breach of contract
-Layoff Notices, work reduction/work from home agreements, furloughs
-Government assistance measures for employees and businesses during the pandemic
-Employee recall notices, potential constructive dismissal claims
-Occupational Health & Safety issues and WorkSafe BC requirements post-pandemic
-Any other relevant topic related to COVID-19 and the workplace

It is imperative that you read other students’ contributions before posting in order to avoid duplication. You may choose the same topic as a student who has posted before you, but you must then choose a different sector of employment (e.g. if someone posts about layoff notices in the retail sector and you would like to write about layoff notices, then post something about layoff notices in the hotel sector, or restaurant sector, or professional services sector, etc.). Also, pay attention to the sources you are reading and citing. For example, many law firms are writing about employment law issues that pertain to COVID-19 and posting their advice on their company websites; this would be a credible source. Information from government websites and stories from major news outlets are also credible sources from which to cite and reference. Finally, keep jurisdiction in mind as you must write about information that pertains to British Columbia.
