This article cites data that supports research and best practices for breast feeding infants within 24 hours of birth. The World Health Organization (WHO)data, however cites discrepancies between geographical areas in the implementation of this practice.
QUESTIONS
The WHO reports that newborn babies who are most at-risk of premature death or disease are from low and middle income nations due to delayed breast feeding of their mother’s milk.
The authors also cited that other differences in breast feeding rates such as the sex of the baby, the urban or rural environment the baby was born in or the household income of the mother were not factors in whether or not the baby was breast fed within 24 hours of birth.
1. What other possible factors do you hypothesize that may contribute to the lack of breast feeding as soon as possible after birth among women from low and middle income nations?
The WHO cites that they do not have large aggregates of data on breastfeeding mothers in the U.S. and Europe and they estimate that approximately 21% of infants born in high income countries are not breast fed within the first 24 hours of life. In addition, an estimated 71% of women gave birth in medical institutions during 2017, but only 51% reported breastfeeding their infant within the first hour of life.
2. Why do you think that breast feeding rates within 24 hours of birth were lower in more developed countries or higher income countries compared to other geographical areas?
Social, economic, institutional support for breastfeeding is a social issue that many individuals support. ” Millenial moms are the ones really driving the change in how breastfeeding is being accepted in the mainstream”. ” Increasing awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and making it more accessible for women is the key in promoting supportive policies. Its great to have recommendations, but if there isn’t the infrastructure to support breastfeeding, then all it does is make moms feel worse.” (Sascha Mayer).
3. After reading the article and reviewing the debate about public breastfeeding, what do you think? Do you think that employers, public places, public transportation, should create more places or environments to support breastfeeding mothers? Why or why not?
