Discussion 1: In his TED talk, William Ury talks about the power of listening within relationships. While he specializes in negotiation, much of what he has to say applies to all relationships, including the therapeutic relationship. Which of his ideas appealed to you when you think about working with clients? How could you see applying these ideas during an initial interview with someone? What did you think of his idea of listening to ourselves first and how might that be relevant to clinical work? What other ideas or thoughts came to mind for you as you listened to his talk? video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saXfavo1OQo Discussion 2: In the presented videos, you saw an example of a service that preps young children for giftedness testing. The goals of such programs are often to get students into elite kindergarten programs designed for gifted students. The second video showed an example of a young child being coached on how to work through the types of problems she would encounter on the test. What do you think of 1) using tests to determine kindergarten program admission 2) the effect of prepping on the validity of the test results? Do you think this sort of prep negatively impacts the validity of the test (i.e., will overestimate giftedness compared to children who have not been prepped). Are there any positive aspects you can think of to test prep (e.g., anxiety is lower because student knows what to expect and can therefore perform to ability)? What do you think the child’s experience is of such prep teaching? Positive? Negative?
