Watch the following film excerpts from La Sylphide and Swan Lake
1. La Sylphide
The story of La Sylphide centers around James, a young Scotsman who is about to be married to Effie. The morning of the wedding day while James is dozing in a chair by the fire, a Sylph appears beside him and awakens him with an airy kiss. The first act of the Romantic Period ballet is in the castle, the real world.
James becomes infatuated with the Sylph and is unable to get her out of his mind. He continues to attend to Effie although he is only partially there because he can’t stop thinking about the beautiful Sylph.
The pas de trois (35:47) is a beautiful sequence in which James is dancing with Effie before the wedding and dancing with the Sylph at the same time. The unique aspect of this pas de trois is that the choreography leads the viewer to believe James is the only one who can see the sylph and Effie thinks she is the only one dancing with James.
James is overtaken by the idea of the sylph and the second act of the ballet (a two-act ballet) takes place in an imaginary world, a magical forest. James sees the witch in the forest who gives him a special scarf to give to his beautiful sylph as a present. What James does not know is that the scarf has a spell on it and when James wraps the scarf around the sylph it will make her wings fall off and she will die.

2. Swan Lake
Swan Lake is a timeless love story which mixes magic, romance and tragedy. It is a four act Imperial Period ballet which features Prince Siegfried and the lovely swan princess, Odette. Odette, under the spell of an evil sorcerer, must spend her days as a swan swimming on a lake full of tears and only during her nights is she able to return to her beautiful human form.
Prince Siegfried and the swan fall in love, but the evil sorcerer continues to play tricks on the prince. The sorcerer confuses the loving relationship between the prince and Odette when he brings the evil twin, Odile, to the prince who immediately thinks it’s Odette. Prince Siegfried, unable to tell the difference between Odette and Odile continues to show his love to both. Finally, the fairy tale happy ending comes about when Prince Siegfried and Odette end up together happily-ever-after.
