Points Available: 100Purpose of Assignment: Applying course concepts to our lived experience(s) is an integral part of the Interpersonal Communication course. As such, this writing assignment gives you an opportunity to examine a number of your closest interpersonal relationships, highlighting your understanding of critical course material through analysis of past communicative experience(s). An introspective end to the Interpersonal Communication journey, this reflection will not only summarize what you’ve taken away from the course – it will create the space to think about strengthening old bonds, and forging new ones. Guidelines & DirectionsStep 1: Preparation (Selecting Your Relationships)Choose three (3) people in your life with whom you have a close relationship – this could be with a parent, a sibling, a best friend, a colleague, or the like. For each person, you’ll need to identify the nature and context of your relationship (are you close because of a familial bond, or do you work the same shift as this person?). Although it is not required, you may narrow your reflection by highlighting specific moments or situations that define your relationship with this people – perhaps there is one moment from your childhood that epitomizes the relationship you share with a parent, or maybe there was one occurrence in grade school that solidified the bond between you and a best friend, etc. When writing your paper, you’ll need to provide examples of interactions with these people to illustrate the connection between your lived experience(s) and your understanding of critical course concepts.Step 2: Identify Alternative Communication CompetenciesFor each person/relationship, identify one (1) interpersonal skill you would like to improve upon. As we’ve seen throughout the semester – even the most “solid” of relationships have room for communicative improvement (no one can claim to be a “perfect” communicator). For example – should you choose to reflect upon your relationship with a best friend, perhaps you might wish to practice more perspective-taking (discussed during the Perception unit) so as to “stand in their shoes” and prevent future miscommunication. Another example – perhaps you’ve realized you use too many unsupportive messages when communicating with a parent (Verbal Communication unit), how can you go about altering your language use to strengthen said relationship? Step 3: Write your Paper After completing steps one and two, you will write a formal paper that ties your understanding of course concepts and self-reflection(s) together. I suggest using the following structure when formatting your paper:1. Introduction – (1-2 paragraphs)2. Connecting Concepts to Lived Experience – (1 page per relationship)a. Relationship 1 – (Ex. Best Friend) i. Describe nature of relationship 1. Examples – connection(s) to course contentii. Future competent communication – one interpersonal skill1. Examples – connection(s) to course content Wilson COMM Interpersonalb. Relationship 2 – (Ex. Parent)i. Describe nature of relationship 1. Examples – connection(s) to course contentii. Conclusion – (1-2 paragraphs)Total Paper Length: 3 – 4 pagesWriting TipsYou may include any other observations, findings, or self-discoveries deemed relevant for the overall advancement of your writing. Please include a thoughtful introduction that describes your Interpersonal Communication journey (what have you learned about yourself as a communicator?) and a conclusion that summarizes an understanding of how competent interpersonal communication skills and concepts (discussed in class) in these situations might improve your relationships.
