This collaborative exercise, responding to the core reading/focus text articles, is based on the learning materials in Module 2.
Before you begin, must read the learning materials in Module 2, including the core reading/focus text you selected and the critical rereading questions from the “Critical Rereading” PowerPoint. Also review the “Rhetorically Describing a Text” PowerPoint in Module 1.
Module 2 initial post
First, identify which core reading you selected to write about for Writing Project 1.
Then, answer at least FOUR of the following discussion questions for the core reading you have selected to write about for Writing Project 1. Identify which questions you are responding to by number.
1. What do you know about the author of the core reading? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, report your most important findings about the author’s publications, credentials, or experience.
2. What do you know about the genre or purpose of the core reading? Is it a story, a poem, a memoir, an argument, a newspaper article, an editorial, a report, or something else? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, describe what kind of writing you think the core reading is.
3. What do you know about the intended audience or historical context for the core reading? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, describe who you think the author is writing this for, and why.
4. What is the main point of the core reading? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, summarize what you think the main point or message is that the author wants us to “take away” from the core reading.
5.What evidence does the author use to support the main point? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, describe one or more pieces of evidence the author uses to support the point.
6.What is the most interesting detail in the core reading? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, describe the most interesting or striking detail in the reading and why it interests you.
7.What is still most confusing about the core reading? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, describe something that you don’t understand in the core reading and why.
8.What kind of language or style does the author use in the core reading? Is the tone casual, formal, humorous, serious, angry, or something else? Are the word choices simple or difficult? What sort of images does the author use? Are certain words or images repeated? In two-three sentences, and using your own words, characterize the author’s use of language.
Your Module 2 initial post should be at least 200 original words.
Module 2 responses. Read all your classmates’ initial postings, and respond to two. You may add additional information or insights or answer questions. You may agree by adding additional reasons or examples. You may disagree by adding reasons or counter-examples. You may comment on how your classmate’s view has helped you better understand the reading. If you believe your peer has misunderstood or misinterpreted something in the core reading, you may respectfully correct your peer and offer an alternative reading or explanation. Be as specific as you can.
Your two Module 2 response posts (at least 100 original words each) are due by the end of Module 2. The board will be graded after all three posts (initial post and response posts) are completed.
