At the start of the class, you were assigned a book by Wilson. In it he offers that it is becoming more difficult to discuss discrimination because there are many who do not see actions or outcomes as being discriminatory. This same point was discussed by Alexander and Anderson, and in our discussions, I discussed the new book by Anderson and the “iconic ghetto”. Critics look at disproportionate minority contact in the community and offer it is merely a result of the geographic location where more crime happens. They see the creation of quality of life ordinances, increasing enforcement of those ordinances, increased amounts for bail, higher rates of pretrial detention, and higher sentences, and offer that it is within the law.
As Socrates offered, you cannot tell people what to think. You cannot argue with them over facts, because they may fundamentally disagree with the facts presented. Rather, the debate must center on understanding their position and making them question their position. You do not convince them you are correct, you make them question fundamentally, if they are correct. To understand their position is to offer insight into how you dismantle the foundation of that position.
To that end, the purpose of this activity is to select clear examples of a discriminatory practice, policy, or outcome. Once you have selected your examples (anchor points), your task is to explain the reasons there are those in the community, within the police organization, and within the courts who do not see these actions as discriminatory. What makes them “blind” to seeing these examples as discriminatory? What are the pushes and pulls placed upon those who do this work, who are unable to see these practices as discriminatory?
In answering this question, apply no less than five specific points from the Anderson text “Code of the Street”, and using contextual examples from other sources explain how disparities and inequalities are perpetuated between and within the Criminal Justice Institutions of the Police and Courts and that of the Community.
