Your final for this semester will be to write a piece of reflective, expository writing which meets the following guidelines. You need to submit it to turnitin.com prior to the deadline listed on the Assignment Calendar. It will not be accepted in any other location. No extensions will be given except in the case of a documented emergency.
Please be sure to read through the complete document before beginning your assignment, and please do so well in advance of the due date so that you can resolve any questions you have in plenty of time to do your best on your essay.
You are not required to have a conference with the Writing Center for this assignment, but you may use their services if you wish. Please see the note on the unit description or the Assignment Calendar for this unit about when they close for the semester.
Your essay should demonstrate that you:
Understand MLA, 8th ed. format
Can create an introduction that engages your reader and leads smoothly into your thesis
Can apply what we discussed in relation to creating effective thesis statements
Can develop effective paragraphs using the TED structure
Can mold a carefully crafted and effective conclusion which leaves the reader with a strong lasting image and impression of the essay
Use transitions, signposting, echo words, sentence patterns, grammar, and syntax to add emphasis and cohesion to your essay
Can move beyond the “five paragraph essay” structure and format, letting content and rhetorical needs dictate choices you’ve made rather than formula criteria
Are capable of modifying your writing to meet the needs and expectations of a particular rhetorical occasion (For example, this final exam is a rhetorical occasion.)
Are capable of modifying your writing to meet the needs and expectations of particular writing genres (meta-writing, reflective writing, academic essays)
Are capable of understanding a college-level writing prompt (these guidelines), dividing a multi-step writing assignment into manageable “chunks” and developing a plan to complete the assignment, independently seeking out guidance from college resources if needed, and finally, revising, editing, and polishing your essay so that it serves as an example of your best work of college-level critical reading, critical thinking, and critical writing and rhetoric skills
Can apply feedback from others, self-reflection, and concepts you’ve studied this semester to strengthen your rhetorical choices and your writing
Are capable of meeting the Student Learning Outcomes as stated in the Course Outline
Correctly uses MLA citation style, 8th edition when information from any source materials is used. The only sources which may be used are those which have been provided to the class by the instructor for use during the current semester. Students need to use only a lead-in phrase when introducing any material of their own which comes from a source other than their final essay (ex. their argumentation essay or an assignment in their Notebook where the information is their original idea) or a document created specifically for the use of the class by the instructor (ex. an assignment guideline, feedback from the instructor on turnitin.com, or the Course Outline). If the information they are including comes from a source outside themselves or was not created by the instructor for the exclusive use of the class—in other words, for sources they were assigned to read or view which was originally created for purposes other than this class, they must use a lead-in phrase, a parenthetical citation if needed, and list the source correctly on a Works Cited page at the end of their document.
Your essay should be between 1500 2000 words. Remember, even though there are particular topics you need to cover, your essay cannot simply be a series of short answer paragraphs arranged in essay format.
It should answer all of the following questions:
How would you assess your learning and/or performance during this term? Avoid assigning yourself a letter grade, and focus instead on providing a strong narrative description of your assessment as compared to the Student Learning Outcomes which are listed in the Course Outline as well as the topical units which were used for the divisions of the semester.
If you had to use five adjectives to describe yourself as a writer or student, what would they be and why?
What are the three most important skills or concepts in relation to writing that you learned in the class? Why are they the ones that you chose? Describe your development and process of development in each of these areas. Use specific evidence from your essays and work in your Notebook to substantiate and illustrate your claims.
How will you use those in future classes?
How will you use them in your life outside of academia?
How have you changed as a consumer/creator of rhetoric?
How have your ideas about rhetoric and how it is used outside of academia changed since the beginning of the term
*Please be advised that submissions not meeting the minimum requirements including but not limited to length and topics listed, which are off-topic, or which include sources not already provided by the instructor for use during the class will not receive a grade of a C or higher.
