The purpose of this project is to allow students to apply the knowledge they have accumulated in this course to a real-life scenario. In particular, the project aims to build student skills in data gathering, manipulation, and analysis, and in the application of basic cost-benefit analysis. A Word document(double-spaced, 12-pt font, and 1-inch margins) in a format similar to a research paper.
Make sure this paper is organized, logical, and succinct. Contents of the paper: While there is no length limit, students should work on being efficient in their writing. The following is a suggested structure for your project paper:
1.Introduction: this section will provide general background information about why the topic you are addressing is important and how it is expected to benefit the university community (relative to the status quo). In other words, this is your opportunity to specify the set of alternative projects. For most topics, the status quo is the only alternative project.
2.Impacts and standing: identify standing, impact categories, and impact measurement indicators. The standing is evident for your analysis but identifying impact categories and measurement indicators may require a bit of effort, such as previous CBAs and any other studies that may have measured impacts one way or another.
3.Data, Methods, and Assumptions: Describe your data sources, the methods used for your estimations, simplifying assumptions, assumptions about the discount rate to be used, the life of the project, and any other relevant details.Make sure to provide explicit references for everything that you use in your research.
4.Estimation Results: Monetize all impacts, discount them over the life of the project, and calculate the net present value(NPV). Report your results in a comprehensive table and discuss them in the text.
5.Sensitivity Analysis: Make changes to certain parameters (e.g. higher discount factor) to see the effect on your NPV.
6.Conclusions and recommendations: summarize your analysis and provide conclusions and policy recommendations.
7.Bibliography: use Harvardor MLAstyle. Make sure all cited papers are listed and all listed references are cited.I find the Google Scholar Chrome extension very useful but there are other packages you can use to organize your references.
8.Tables (and figures is applicable):they are to be inserted at the end of the manuscript after your bibliography and not within your text. Make sure they are numbered and labeled properly.All figures must also be created from scratch. Copying and citing someone else’s figure or table is not acceptable.
