Content area connections

Integrating literature studies in content areas creates a well-rounded learning experience for the students. This literature integration allows students to explore new learning in subject areas, such as science and social studies, with the use of realistic fiction, historical fiction, and poetry, to name a few.

Select a content area or unit of study that students will be studying in the subject areas of science or social studies in a grade level of your choice. Identify five informational books, stories, and poems you would use to teach your chosen subject. Include at least one historical fiction, realistic fiction book or story, and at least one poem that could be used in a study of the content. Identify how the book, story, or poem connects to the content. Select five different delivery methods for teaching each book, story, or poem and summarize the learning experience for the students.

Use the “Content Area Connections Template” ATTACHED to show how you would integrate these various texts into content instruction. Include one learning experience for each delivery method that is appropriate for the grade level chosen. Consider the following delivery method suggestions:
Read-alouds
Class discussions
Reading-writing connection
Independent reading
Literature circles
Write a 500-750 word summary of how the literature selections enhance the learning experience for the students through appropriate classroom applications. Include an explanation of how integrating realistic fiction, historical fiction, and poetry creates a well-rounded learning experience for the students.
