My general impression of Chief Charles Ramsey’s talk was that he was well informed, had immense personal experience, and cared about what he was talking about. Not only does Chief Ramsey have personal experience in policing but he has researched the past issues, successes, and policing strategies that shaped his views. There was a lot of great information in Chief Ramsey’s talk but one piece of information that really stood out to me was a piece of history he shared; Policing throughout history affects the way police are viewed today. Chief Ramsey talked about finding out police officers helped execute Nazi orders in Germany and even today if you ask an officer what their job is their response will be to enforce the law rather than to uphold the constitution. This is a flawed way of thinking since it can lead to blindly enforcing laws because an authoritarian said they are so rather than enforcing the constitution. Another astonishing thing that I learned from Chief Ramey is aggressive policing tactics missed the fact communities do not measure success by the absent of crime, they want to see justice as well. This was a major takeaway for me because I think it is human nature to want justice for wrongdoings rather than just the absence of them. I think that Chief Ramsey did lend insights on how to improve police-community relations (especially in urban areas) by stating everyone has a bias and it needs to be recognized to manage them, stating every community is different and needs to be policed different, and that there needs to be a level of respect from officers to their community.
