Constructions of Deviance, 8th Edition, ISBN 13: 978-1-305-09354-6, Patricia A. Adler & Peter Adler, Wadsworth Cengage Learning
Module 4: Overview & Outcomes
In this module, you expand your understanding of the social constructionist perspective on understanding deviance. This module will introduce you to the processes by which behaviors, individuals and groups “become deviant,” and it will challenge you to think about the ways in which you construct your own reality, together with your interaction partners, each day.
Course Outcomes (CO)
The course outcomes that will be addressed in this module are:
⦁ CO2: Use major theoretical perspectives to understand deviant behavior and social reactions
to and consequences of deviant behavior.
⦁ CO3: Acquire a basic understanding of how to apply theories of deviance to their own personal and professional experiences.
⦁ CO4: Apply appropriate social science theories and methodologies to do an in-depth analysis of an important question, issue or problem (Social Science Learning Outcome 2).
Module 4: Learning & Assessment Activities
During this module, you will:
⦁ Module 4: Module Notes: Deviance as a Social Construct
⦁ Adler & Adler Part IV (pages 149-170, 192-205, 229-242)

Module 4: Module Notes: Deviance as a Social Construct
This module takes you on a deeper exploration of deviance as a “social construct”. Let’s review and remember what a social construct is: social concepts that we create, define and give meaning to based on our own culture’s values, norms and beliefs. They are not based on any “natural fact”, which explains the variation on definitions you’ll see from one society to another. For example: our society creates and defines what is deviant and what is not, what is acceptable behavior and what is not. But if you look to other cultures, you’ll often find that what is deviant behavior in one culture is not considered deviant in all cultures. Other examples of social constructs include gender, marriage, family, race, just to name a few. To summarize:
⦁ Do not exist independently in the natural world, but we act as if they do
⦁ They are inventions of society
⦁ They are dependent on our culture
⦁ As culture changes, so do social constructs
⦁ Some come and then go forever
⦁ Some remain but change in type and degree over time and place
In this module, we take a closer look at the process: how society constructs definitions of deviance and applies these definitions to certain groups of people but not others. We’ll look at this process as a moral campaign, and examine the role of the moral entrepreneurs responsible for this process: the rule creators and the rule enforcers.
We’ll also take a closer look at differential social power (based in the labeling theory ideology) that helps explain how certain groups of people are able to resist being labeled as deviant for the same behavior that other groups of people are not able to resist being labeled deviant. If demonstrating “X” behavior makes me deviant, why doesn’t it also make you deviant?
In addition to the video “Social Construction” posted within this module, here’s an optional TED Talk video that you might find helpful in clarifying this concept. The speaker shares her personal story to illustrate the concept of “intelligence” as a social construct to explain how society’s perceptions of intelligence are applied in an unfair manner.
M4D2: Social Power and Labeling
Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to:
2. Use major theoretical perspectives to understand deviant behavior and social reactions to and consequences of deviant behavior.
3. Acquire a basic understanding of how to apply theories of deviance to their own personal and professional experiences.
4. Apply appropriate social science theories and methodologies to do an in-depth analysis of an important question, issue or problem (Social Science Learning Outcome 2).
Drawing on Chapter 18, “Legitimated Suppression: Inner-city Mexican Americans and the Police,” and Chapter 21, “The Saints and the Roughnecks,” define the criminal justice/sociological theory of “Labeling,” and discuss some of the consequences of “Labeling” for young people today. How do these socially constructed categories have real-life repercussions for people who become labeled?
