You can choose any orchestra concert on YouTube. As long as it is a symphony orchestra concert, opera, choir concert, musical, chamber music (small ensembles) concert.
You are to write about at least three pieces, songs or compositions in the concert. One must be the first piece, one must be the last piece; the third can be any other work in the middle. Of course, you can always write on more.
You are to write the equivalent of a 2-3 page report giving a review of the concert you attended. Your review must include the following:
What is the venue (location) of the performance?
How was the audience dressed?
What kind of listener were you, mostly, at the concert? Why? Move into the realm of perceptive listener in order to discuss the pieces performed. However, do use your instincts as a casual and referential listener as a clue to your analysis. E.g., how do you feel when you hear a crescendo? Other dynamics? Fast-paced music? Slow tempos? Simple versus complex music? Or, conversely, when you feel different emotions or see different pictures in your mind, what is happening in the music?
What pieces were performed?
What was the musical style of each of the pieces performed?
What was the instrumentation of the orchestra or ensemble?
Discuss the seating arrangement of the instruments in the orchestra or ensemble.
If a choir concert, what was the arrangement of the different voice types and how large was the ensemble
Analyze each piece played in the concert with following criteria from the course, to the best of your ability:
Overall structure of the Music, including genre: is it a song, a concerto, a sonata, a symphony, single movement piece, aria, opera, musical, jazz number? How many movements does the piece have (how many “subtitles” are there under the main title?)
Purpose of the Music—does it have a function or is it just entertainment?
Tempo—use Italian terms
Dynamics—use Italian terms
Timbre—what instruments or voices are featured and when/why? What is the effect?
Rhythm—see if you can hear meter or repeating patterns in the background; is it smooth or angular?
Melody (conjunct or disjunct, are there—are there changes?)
Harmony (Major or minor or does it change?)
Form (structure of the music: this is the hardest element to hear. Some clues can be in the titles of the piece or movement, such as “Variations…,” “Sonata for…,” “Rondo,” etc.
Texture (homophonic, monophonic, polyphonic or are there changes)? Are there solos?
Historical Period (look at the dates of the composer)
Style: Jazz, classical or other? If other, what is it?
Mood of the piece and does it change? How does it make you feel? Be as descriptive as you can here.
Did you enjoy the concert? Why or why not?
Organize your writing into well constructed paragraphs as you would any good paper. Include a short opening paragraph stating what you went to and where and what pieces were listed in the program. The body of the paper should include the in-depth discussion of the pieces and how they made you feel. Use a separate paragraph for each piece if they are lengthy. The concluding paragraph could discuss what you learned overall and whether you enjoyed the concert.
