You will write a comparative analysis on the search for freedom in Woman at Point Zero (not included) a novel by Nawal El Saadawi and Breath, Eyes, and Memory (not included) a novel by Edwidge Danticat’s. You need a tripartite argument statement that addresses the grounds for comparison (why you are comparing these novels; what they have in common), the contrast between the novels (your thesis) and why it is important (the significance of your argument)- how it changes our understanding of the topic.
Things to answer in the essay:
What systems of oppression do women face in the novel? (cultural, economic, legal)? What form does the quest for freedom take in each novel? Why do you think accounts for the very different place each protagonist finds herself at the end of the novel? In other words, why does Danticat’s protagonist begin to heal from the cycle of intergenerational trauma, while Firdaeus can only find freedom in death?
To give your argument significance, draw conclusions from your answer to the above questions by addressing the following: What do we learn from comparing these novels about how women from poor countries where male-dominated systems of oppression are unchallenged by the legal system can find freedom?
*Use Spivak’s essay, “Can the Subaltern Speak?” as your theoretical framework. (which i included)
STRUCTURE
1. Briefly introduce the reader to each novel, and explain why you are comparing them, what they have in common;
2. Clarify the theoretical framework you will be using. Clearly explain the theory to the reader who is unfamiliar.
3. State your argument at the end of the introduction or in the second paragraph. Your argument should:
1) Make clear the grounds of comparison, or why you are comparing these novels.
2) Focus on the contrast between the two literary works.
3) Explain the significance of your argument on the first or second page and in the conclusion.
4. Explain how each literary work relates to its historical and/or political context. (first two body paragraphs).
5. Discuss the narrative method used by each author, if relevant.
6. Illustrate your comparative argument through relevant textual examples, alternating in your analysis of subtopics from one literary work to another.
Conclusion: Return to the points you made earlier in your essay about the significance of your argument. How has comparing these novels changed the way you think about your topic?
