Code-switching (CS) is quite common among bilinguals. As a bilingual person, you most likely switch between Arabic and English. In many cases, this process happens unconsciously. Since CS is a reality of everyday life, we will analyze this linguistic phenomenon according to the framework expounded by Albirini (2011):
Listener Accommodation: code-switching that is used to engage listeners.
Emphasis: code-switching that is used as emphasis i.e. repeats the content of the previous sentence to reinforce it
Simplification: code-switching that is used to explain and give examples
Tone Shift: code-switching that is used to introduce humor
Folk Saying: code-switching that is used to give a folk saying
You should select any social media platform and find five posts that include instances of CS from English to Arabic or vice versa. Examine the sentences which include CS and decide the purpose or reason that has triggered the language used to switch from one language to another. Do you consider Albirini’s list exhaustive, or do you think that there are other reasons for this process? If so, mention this reason.
I will be writing the 5 examples and explaining each since you may not speak or understand Arabic:
1) “sayavta”” this word comes from the English word “save” and is used as a verb to saving something.
2) “tair” : this word is pronounced and is used as the same meaning which is a “car tire” in English (noun)
3) “Lista”: this word is originally “list” in English and is used as the same meaning (noun).
4)” Candation”: this word comes from the word “air condition” and it is a name for the box of air conditioning in Kuwait.
5) “eqzoz”: this word comes from the English word “exhaust” meaning the exhaust system used in the cars.
these are all words that are used in a Kuwaiti’s normal life as it has become part of our language.
