Description
For our final paper, you need to write an analytical essay on code-switching in Kuwait. Code-switching (CS) is quite frequent among bilinguals. As a bilingual person, you most likely switch between Arabic and English. In many cases, this process happens unconsciously. By “unconsciously,” I mean you do not plan to do. Since CS is a reality of everyday life, we will analyze this linguistic phenomenon according to the framework expounded by Albirini (2011): Listener Accommodation: code-switching is used to engage listeners. Emphasis: code-switching is used as emphasis, i.e., repeats the content of the previous sentence to reinforce it Simplification: code-switching that is used to explain and give examples Tone Shift: code-switching is used to introduce humor Folk Saying: code-switching is used to give a folk saying You can have a different category and name it: Other: CS is used to achieve a different purpose You should start your paper with an introduction to CS and its frequency among bilinguals. It is always a good idea to have some background information about CS and its definition. I will upload some sources on Moodle that you can use for extra information in addition to your textbook. For the analysis section, you should: 1. Select any social media platform(s) and find twenty (20) posts that include instances of CS from English to Arabic or vice versa. 2. Examine the sentences which include CS and decide the purpose or reason that has triggered the language user to switch from one language to another. 3. Start with the example as it appears online, followed by its translation where needed and then your comment. Each example should be numbered from (1) to (20). In the end, you should have a conclusion where you state whether you consider Albirini’s list exhaustive, or do you think that there are other reasons for this process? If so, mention this reason. You should also have some afterthoughts regarding the frequency of CS and threatening the Arabic language. This submission represents 25% of your total grade; it should be 1500 words in length, at least. social media platforms: (Twitter, Instagram, and Whatsapp) 20 examples: 1) “Sayavta”: which is used to describe the act of saving documents, pictures, etc. and is derived from the English word “Save” 2) “Lista”: this word means “list” in English and it is used as the same meaning, which is a list of things 3) “Eqzoz”: this word is derived from the English word ” Exhaust” which has the same meaning that is the exhaust system in a car 4) “Tair”: this word is derived from the English word “Tire” meaning the car tire and it is used by the same meaning 5) “Candation”: this word is derived from the English word “Air condition”, and it describes the old air conditioning box used in the last 90’s. 6) “computer”: this is an English word that Kuwaiti’s use rather than using the Arabic word of computer 7) ” Video”: this is also an English word that Kuwaiti’s use instead of saying the Arabic word of video 8) “Microwave”: an English word Kuwaiti’s use instead of saying the translation of microwave in Arabic 9) “telephone”: also an English word Kuwaiti’s use instead of saying “jawal” which means telephone in Arabic 10)” Laptop”: this is also an English word Kuwaitis use instead of saying that Arabic word for laptop 11)” Lait”: this word is derived from the English word “Light” and is used as the same meaning of the English word 12) “Saikal”: This is derived from the English word “motorcycle” Kuwaiti’s use of this word has the same meaning but has arabnized it. 13): “profile”: this is an English word Kuwaitis use to describe someone’s profile on Twitter or Instagram 14) “iyqonat”: this word means “icons” in Kuwaiti it is used as the same English meaning. for example the iPhone icons 15) “Flash”: this is an English word meaning “flash drive” Kuwaitis use it as the same meaning 16) “Bio”: this is an abbreviation to the English word “biography” Kuwaitis use it as the same meaning.
