The research paper is worth 30% of your total course grade.
The final assignment in HSC6350 is the coaching & leadership philosophy paper research paper. You must discuss at least three personal leadership tenets (principles) and clearly explain what those principles mean to you, providing research support for each. Your coaching & leadership philosophy must clearly and compellingly articulate your most important personally held beliefs about effective leadership, describe the coach you aspire to be, and the leadership you will hold yourself accountable to provide.
***A note on spelling/grammar: I will deduct points if you turn in a paper that is full of spelling mistakes and incomplete or run on sentences. Poor grammar and spelling errors detract from the clarity of your writing, and as a result, negatively affect your grade. Don’t lose easy points!***
1) The page limit for the research paper is 5 pages (not including title & reference pages).
2) You must include references and in-text citations from at least ten (10) scientific research articles. Do not use lecture slides as a reference/in-text citation.
3) Formatting should follow APA guidelines:
Margins: 1 inch
Arial size 11 or Times New Roman 12 font
First line of each paragraph indented
Double space between paragraphs
Appropriately formatted references

4) Your paper should include the following sections:
a) Title page
o Overview or “roadmap” of your coaching & leadership philosophy.
o Identify and define your three (3) leadership tenets (principles).
These should describe your most important views on effective coaching and leadership.
c) Main body
o Each leadership tenet should be addressed in detail in a separate paragraph.
Provide evidence & support for each tenet through 1) personal experience, and 2) by referencing peer-reviewed research
d) Conclusion section
o Briefly restate your coaching & leadership philosophy.
o Summarize your three (3) leadership tenets.
D. Specific Requirements:
The intent of the research paper assignment is to give you an opportunity to reflect on your own personal experiences, the experiences gained in this course, and relevant research literature, in order to develop and clearly articulate your approach to leadership. You are free to tailor your research paper based on your future career goals, i.e., your approach to coaching, teaching or leadership (whichever best applies to you). A successfully written research paper will serve as a guideline throughout your career, and will be able to answer the question “How will I lead?”
You are encouraged to develop a coaching & leadership philosophy that complements your personality and strengths. You are who you are – while you can learn from mentors in the field, your approach to leadership should be your own. If someone were to read your research paper, they should walk away with a clear understanding of what to expect from you as a coach/leader and should be assured that you truly value and embody the leadership beliefs you describe. To write your research paper, discuss at least three (3) personal leadership tenets (principles). Each principle must be clearly identified and defined, i.e., what does the principle mean to you personally.
Each tenet should convey your most important personally-held beliefs about effective coaching and leadership. These should not simply be selected concepts taken from the course material (e.g., “my most important leadership tenet is coaching for character…”).
In defining your leadership tenets, you might consider the following areas:
The purpose of athletics in general or within an educational institution.
Your responsibilities as a coach.
Your personal goals as a coach.
The relationship between you and your athletes.
Methods of motivation and communication with athletes.
Your views on discipline.
Your perception of what your athletes’ goals should be in athletics.
The degree of emphasis on winning and losing.
Your stance on the use of performance-enhancing substances or recreational drugs.
Your relationship with parents, other coaches, support personnel, or administrators.
Explain why you believe that each leadership tenet is important to your effectiveness as a leader.
Support your choice of each tenet with the following:
1) Use a convincing example from your own life experience (e.g., as an athlete, fellow, coach, or other personal or work experience) to explain why each given tenet is part of your overall leadership philosophy. These examples should be based on your own personal experiences or observations, not taken from someone else’s experience or based on anecdotes.
2) Provide peer-reviewed research support for your leadership tenets and/or concepts covered during this course. Explain how the research relates to concepts covered during this course or how it provides evidence-based support for your leadership tenets. Address how material covered in this course has shaped, refined, changed or conflicted with your leadership beliefs (as applicable). Explain how research (as related to course material/your coaching & leadership tenets) has helped you better understand effective leadership and gain awareness of factors contributing to successful coaching.
Grades will be assigned based on a scale of 0-50 points as follows:
A 48-50 pts B+ 44 pts C+ 38-39 pts
A- 45-47 pts B 41-43 pts C 36-37 pts
