What is a COACH nurse?
COACHS are critical care nurses that have a specialized skill set to help in the event of a patient’s deterioration or emergency. A COACH nurse may be consulted at any time with any questions or patient concerns.
Responsibilites of the COACH nurse:
Respond to all MATT, CODE BLUE and ERT activations.
Round on every inpatient unit
check in on patients transferred out of the ICU within 24-48 hours
Check in on patients who habe had a MATT or CODE BLUE within their current hospitalization.

The patient had IV complication of Extravastation caused by the medication Acyclovir.
No vascular team at night so COACH was called to come check the patients IV site in the early morning.
The situation was complicated by a time frame of one hour to initate treament and that this particular procedure needed a physican to be called prior to treatment.
The extravastation was treated by 5 injection points of Hyaluronidase around the damaged tissue.
The same patient also had new onset of stuttering and numbness of the legs.
A stroke and menigitis were already ruled out. As the student I am thinking the patient could be tested for Lyme disease and sphyillis.
