after watching these videos need to write an outline for this project and OUTLINE FOR PROJECT TWO
You have recently read and watched several arguments that respond to popular culture “texts.” For this assignment, the “texts” we will use will be television shows. For this assignment, you will create your own argument that is supported by examples from one television show you have watched.
There are two main skills at work in this assignment: analyzing the content of a show to find deeper meaning and using evidence from the text to make an argument about its meaning. These skills—analyzing and using evidence–are ones you will use in academic writing throughout your college career.
The Assignment
In this second outline, you are to look at scenes from one television show. Look at the ways the show depicts one of the complex issues discussed in the videos including gender, race, ethnicity, class, religion, nationality or other identity issues (such as being an athlete, being a smart kid, being a single parent). Concentrate on only one issue (such a gender or race or ethnicity).
Think about how the show you chose might influence the audience in a negative way by presenting a stereotypical representation of this identity issue. A good example of a paper topic would be to argue that Sophia Vergara’s character in Modern Family portrays racial stereotypes about Latinas as women who wear tight clothes, talk loudly, and get angry over small things. You would then want to pick a specific episode in which you see these characteristics and present evidence from the episode that supports your argument.
Choose a TV show you are familiar with and find an episode online to watch so that you can be specific in your analysis. Be sure to quote dialogue from the scenes you find in your paper. You also need to cite your evidence from the episode using MLA format. Include the hour:minute:second. An in-text citation will look like this: (01:14:56). Instructions for citing videos are in this module. Outlines and papers that don’t have cited quotes won’t be graded.
First, describe the elements that make the character a stereotype in the first two body paragraphs, citing dialogue and specific moments from the show. For example, a student who is Indian-American, was a paper about Abu in The Simpsons. This student found two ways that Abu was a stereotype and quoted from The Simpsons to support his argument.
Next, discuss why the stereotype isn’t true by describing how you or someone you know well defies that stereotype.
Your outline should contain complete sentences because it is a graded assignment. It should follow this general pattern:
I. Introduction (4-6 sentences long)
Introduce the general topic
Move toward the narrower topic that involves you
End your introduction with a thesis sentence (the argument that youwill make in your paper)
II. Body Paragraph One (10 – 18 sentences)
Start the paragraph with a topic sentence (The main idea of the paragraph and one that develops the thesis)
Provide an example from the tv show about this main idea. Add quotes when they help make your point.
Explain how this example relates to your argument. Be sure to have quotes from two different scenes.
III. Body Paragraph Two (10 – 18 sentences)
Start the paragraph with a topic sentence (The main idea of the
paragraph and one that develops the thesis)
Provide an example from the tv show about this main idea. Add quotes when they help make your point.
Explain how this example relates to your argument. Be sure to have quotes from two different scenes.
IV. Body Paragraph Three (10 – 18 sentences)
Start the paragraph with a topic sentence (The main idea of the paragraph and one that develops the thesis)
Explain how the stereotype you described above is hurtful.
Discuss how you or someone close to you defies the stereotypes you described above.
Provide concrete and at least two specific examples to support your argument.
V. Conclusion
Leave the reader with a closing thought or image.
