Strategies to Reduce Challenging Behaviours
Many children and youth with autism predictably exhibit certain types of challenging behaviour: noncompliance, self-stimulatory behaviours, self-injurious behaviours, and aggression. According to Koegel et al (1995) although the presenting behaviours may appear similar across children, there is often great variability in how children respond to treatment. Because of this, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to choosing interventions is unsuitable.
Directions: In essay format, which contains an introduction of the concepts, a body, and a conclusion analyze three strategies for reducing challenging behaviour. For each strategy, provide an example where the strategy would be helpful and explain why it would be appropriate in that case. Provide pros and cons for each strategy.
