I. Title – The title should describe specifically what was studied in the investigation.
II. Introduction (25%) – Contains the purpose, background and major results / findings.
• Purpose: Contains a single, concise statement of the major objective of the lab (i.e. what are the questions you are trying to answer). Also, state the hypotheses you were testing as well as any specific items you were investigating.
• Background: Provides a brief summary of the topic being investigated including any information that may be necessary in order to explain your purpose. Information that should be discussed includes what cellular respiration / alcoholic fermentation is (what it is, what it does, where it occurs, when it occurs, why it occurs, how it works, and why it is important).
• Results: States the major results / findings of your investigation.
III. Materials & Methods (5% each) – Describe in your own words the materials and methods used in your independent investigation. Use bullets to help organize these sections. Use the proper names of the equipment used as you describe the methods. Your procedures should be detailed enough so that another student unfamiliar with the equipment and activities could easily repeat your work by reading your procedure.
IV. Results (15%) – This section starts with a paragraph that indicates what the data shows and summarizes the significance of the data. This section also includes the charts, graphs, and data tables that summarize the results of your investigation.
V. Discussion (25%) – This section is the most important part of the report. It restates your hypotheses, briefly summarizes your results, explains whether or not your hypotheses were met, and explains how your results support or conflict with the biology involved in your experiment. The section includes specific data of the results of your experiments to explain / support your results as well as provide explanations for any relationships / results observed.
The section does not discuss educational value, skills learned, error analysis, or commentary on the experiment. However, you may describe how any problems you encountered during your investigation may have influenced the results. Suggestions for the improvement of techniques or experimental design may be included here.
VI. Conclusion (5%). Sums up what happened in the experiment and discusses the significance and implications of your investigation.
VII. Works Cited (10%) – List all of the sources that you used to prepare this report, Use a minimum of 3 sources. If you use web-based sources, scholarly organizations (.edu sites) generally provide accurate and reliable information. You must cite each of your sources within the body of your report. Format your works cited using the CSE formatting guidelines which can be found at:
