3. Write a multi-paragraph (PARAGRAPH MUST VARY IN LENGTHS) essay of 1,000 words (4 pages) in which you consider the major contentions (claims) that both Carol Dweck and Devon Price make in their articles, and support or rebut (argue against) their contentions.

The essay you write should be a continuation of the last essay you wrote in Discussion 3 (ATTACHED IN FILES) in which you analyzed statistics from the Nation’s Report Card, ruminated about Ryan Park’s 2018 article “The Last of the Tiger Parents,” and learned about how widely high school curricula can vary in Catherine Gewertz’s 2018 article “High School Diploma Criteria Fall Short, Study Finds.”

In your essay’s introduction …

Include your thesis, a sentence, sentences or paragraphs in which you introduce Dweck’s and Price’s articles appropriately (author’s first and last name, occupation, “Article Title,” publication date or year), and state that you agree or disagree with the major contentions in each article–and summarize these contentions briefly.

There are many reasons for the egregiously (Links to an external site.) low student success rates that the NAEP reports in The Nation’s Report Card, and they vary from one student to another. However, two psychology professors suggest common reasons for low student success rates that are both surprising and insightful. [THESIS] In her 2018 article “Unseen Barriers,” Devon Price faults teachers for coming to the conclusion that students procrastinate because they’re lazy, and seems to imply that this conclusion is a primary reason for student failure. In her 2008 article “Brainology,” Carol Dweck contends that a student’s mindset, and how parents and teachers encourage student success, can actually discourage student success.
