Instructions for the Annotated Bibliography:
The term paper for this course is an annotated bibliography. The goal of this assignment is to get you reading and analyzing quality peer-reviewed academic journal articles. There are many variations of an annotated bibliography – please read these instructions carefully, as failing to follow them could lead to a failing grade.
The annotated bibliography is a formal academic paper that should be less than 1,500 words in length, not including your reference list or title page. The assignment will require you to locate, analyze, and summarize exactly 6 peer-reviewed academic journal articles on a topic relevant to Canadian criminology. One of these summaries can be your edited article review, if suitable. The six articles should all be on the same topic.
First Important Point: You must use six, and only six, articles. The articles must be peer-reviewed academic articles unless you have permission to use something else. You may not use any articles from the course pack or additional readings provided during the course.
Your reviews of each article should be identical to your article review. Specifically, each should be no less than 200 words, and no more than 250 words. You should attempt to highlight and discuss the two or three central or important points from the article, and you should avoid trying to discuss everything from the article. Your annotations should be objective in nature, and each annotation should only review and discuss a single article. A good annotation (review) will explain the topic of the research, the methods used in the research, the results, and possibly, directions for future research. The most important point of discussion should be the results – try to be brief in other areas, and as detailed as possible when discussing the results.
Second Important Point: This is not a literature review. You should not be integrating content from the various articles with one another. Discuss each article separately. In effect, treat each annotation as a separate ‘article review’.
The annotated bibliography should include a brief introduction to your topic, with proper APA in-line citations for any statements of fact (about 1 brief paragraph). Explain what your topic is, and why it is relevant. You should write this introduction last, after reading and reviewing all of your articles. It is a great idea to explain why the topic you have selected is important or relevant. This should be done briefly.
This annotated bibliography will review peer-reviewed academic research on the topic of your topic here. The issue of your topic here is important due to evidence (one or two cited sources showing the importance of your selected topic). Given this, it is clear that research on your topic here is an important area for criminologists to study.
Next, you will have six citations and annotations – one for each article. You must include two components for each article. First, a properly formatted APA citation of the article you are using. Second, an annotation (or review) of the article, which again, should be between 200 and 250 words. This is exactly the same format as your article review. Note that you should not be writing each citation and annotation on a separate page. After finishing one article, start a new paragraph and move on to the next article.
APA citations are quite simple for an academic journal article. The citation will vary slightly depending on the number of authors, but regardless, it should look something like this:
Smith, E., & Jones, M. (2019). Title of journal article goes here. Journal Name goes here in italics, 28 (3), 29-55.
A few things to point out; the authors names should be provided exactly as they appear in the same order that they appear in article. Last name first, followed by a first initial. If there are two authors, use the & symbol between. The title of the article should be written exactly as it appears on the article, with the exception of article titles written in all capital letters. The journal name should be in italics, followed by the issue number and (volume number), and page numbers.
Finally, you need to include a reference list at the end of your paper with a citation for all sources in your paper. For most people, this will simply require you to cut and paste the 6 APA citations onto a separate reference page at the end of your paper. However, if you used any additional sources in your introduction, you should include those sources in your reference list as well.
Your paper should follow standard APA formatting for a formal academic paper, specifically; a title page with your name, student number, and course. Your paper should be written in 12-point font and it should be double spaced. You should have page numbers at the bottom of every page. Make sure you give yourself extra time to edit and check your paper. You should be reading your paper several times before submitting it. You can also consider visiting the Academic Success Centre for additional help with editing a final paper – a good editing process can make a substantial difference in your final grade.
Example of format:
· Title page (with your name, date, student number, etc).
o *this should be on a separate page*
o *Make sure your paper is in 12-point font, double spaced, with page numbers*
· Introduction (1 brief paragraph, with in-line citations for any statements of fact)
· Citation for article 1 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 1
· Citation for article 2 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 2
· Citation for article 3 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 3
· Citation for article 4 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 4
· Citation for article 5 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 5
· Citation for article 6 in proper APA format
· Annotation (review) of article 6
· Reference list *this should be on a separate page*
You do not need to start each article on a new page. Simply leave one blank line, give the citation and annotation for the next article. For more information on Canadian Criminology see this: https://www.britannica.com/science/criminology
