Paper:George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair) served the British government as a member of the Indian Imperial Police in Burma (1922-1927) and so had first-hand experience in the governance of one of Britain’s imperial possessions. The novel, Burmese Days is a fictional account of his observations and opinions during the waning days of British Imperialism. In the novel Orwell describes the European Club as “the spiritual citadel, the real seat of British power; the Nirvana for which native officials pine in vain.” Using this statement as your starting point, explore the different types of relationships (choose at least two) between the colonizers (British) and the colonized (Burmese and Indians) and analyze how these led to the decline of British Imperialism in Burma.
