t seems reasonable to suppose that “The Book” by Emmanuel Goldstein actually represents the author’s own analysis and thoughts about the historical period he had lived through. George Orwell lived from 1903-1950. World War 1, from 1914 to 1918, occurred during his early teen years. The Great Depression (1929-1939) covered much of his early adulthood, and World War 2 (1939-1945) began when he was 36 years old. To many people of his generation, it must have seemed that something was fundamentally wrong with Capitalism or European society.
