Discussion Board Objectives:
Construct a problem based on the course content that lends itself to being critically evaluated by your peers.
Respond critically and constructively to 2 peer posts using current course content, foundational knowledge, and information from a peer-reviewed source (textbook, journal article, figure etc.).
Instructions: This discussion board has two parts.
Post a problem or question on the discussion board that your peers can respond to critically.
The question or problem should be grounded on information from previous units.
It should require the learner to apply basic information from the course in a higher order of thinking (i.e. the answer should not be attainable purely from the text or lectures)
For example (please do not use these examples):
In an experiment, a valine is mutated to a glutamic acid in a transmembrane domain of a protein. What is the likely consequence of this single amino acid change?
A new potential analog of cortisol is being synthesized that is not membrane permeable. Is this analog likely to function in a similar manner to cortisol?
Respond constructively to two questions posted on the discussion board by your peers. You should not answer your own question although you are encouraged to review responses from your peers and respond. The response should be thoughtful and include a peer-reviewed reference which can be found through the UNE library or other internet sources.
Example:
Question: In an experiment, a valine is mutated to a glutamic acid in a transmembrane domain of a protein. What is the likely consequence of this single amino acid change?
Response: Based on information in unit 1, glutamic acid is a polar amino acid and the introduction of a charge into a hydrophobic environment (the membrane) would disrupt the membrane structure. This may also reduce the stability of the protein in the membrane environment. This has been shown in the following link which discusses amino acid changes in transmembrane domains of glycine to arginine. http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0151760
