My topic is bilingual education and why is it bad.
Background:
We have spent the last ten weeks of the semester reading, writing, and discussing the many facets of borders, barriers, and boundaries. We have explored a variety of topics that are impacted by borders, barriers, and boundaries in class readings, videos, and group/class discussions. In Essay 1, we examined the concept of borders; whereas, in Essay 2, we examined the impact of language on culture and identity. Finally, due to Coronavirus, we were unable to explore the borders, boundaries, and barriers of race in America (the Bailey text). However, we will not have a chance to explore many of the ideas related to borders, barriers, and boundaries as thoroughly as we might like. Now, I want to give you a chance to identify a meaningful problem faced by the impact of borders, barriers, and boundaries in your community, investigate the background and causes of the problem, and learn about potential solutions in order to advocate for the best solution. For the purpose of this project, you are free to interpret “your community” in any way you like. For example, you might choose to research a problem faced by students in our campus community (Los Medanos College specifically, or community college generally), your geographic community (your city, neighborhood, or state), or your cultural community (based on religion, ethnicity, sexual/gender identity, etc.) or your political or socio-economic community.
Task:
Demonstrate that the problem you have selected exists by defining/analyzing the problem and then pose a solution. You should provide enough contextual information to show your readers the scope of the problem and explain who/what is affected, how, and why. Most important, you will cite evidence from quality sources that will convince your readers that the problem is serious and worthy of their attention. Using logical reasoning and credible evidence, your goal is to persuade your reader that your proposed solution is feasible, and that it is better than alternative solutions. A strong proposal will anticipate and respond to objections the reader might have and specifically explain how the solution should be implemented.
Helpful Hints:
This is your largest, most important essay of the semester, so this is where everything we have discussed comes together. So make sure:
All of your paragraphs are well developed
Your essay is well organized with each body paragraph developing and supporting your thesis
You have an introduction with a clear thesis
Your sentences show control and sophistication
Be sure you are dealing with an issue which is some way controversial or debatable, for this essay must have a thesis which the following 8-10 papers will prove. Be sure to support your assertions (claims, statements) with evidence from your research; don’t assume your reader automatically agrees with you.
Be sure that your essay answers the question, “So What?”—why is your thesis important? What is the consequence of the issue or phenomenon you are exploring?
Spend some time thinking about organization. What sections will your research essay need to include? In what order should these sections go?
Criteria for Success:
A successful paper will:
Incorporate and cite at least one source from the assigned readings in Border Crossings or one chapter in Racial Realities and Post-Racial Dreams (although we did not read the Bailey text as a class).
Incorporate and cite at least four additional sources with three from the LMC library Databases (must use at least one eBook, one periodical, and one newspaper), and a creditable web site.
Use fieldwork to support your paper (interviews, surveys, observations, participatory experiences, etc.)
Use quotations well (Note: This means your paper will have at least six outside sources total: our class reading(s), reference to fieldwork, and four additional sources)
You may use up to two long quotes in your essay only. However, these quotes may only go up to 6 lines each and must be properly MLA formatted as long quotes.
The tone of your research paper must be academic and formal. For the last page of the essay, you may state how you are connected to the issue. However, for the rest of the essay please do not write about your personal stories or experiences that relate to the topic of your paper. Save talking about yourself until the last page!
You must properly engage with MLA formatting, parenthetical citation, and a Works Cited page. You will not receive an A on your essay no matter how great it is if these are done incorrectly.
Have clear, well-organized sentences; Be thoroughly proofread;
Be at least 2,000 words and a 2,800-word max.
Typed, double-spaced, 12-point font.
Assign Readings are:
“Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan and “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldua in Border Crossings: a Bedford spotlight reader
3 sources must be from https://www.losmedanos.edu/library/
