Here we are at the last exam. It seems as though the history of biology (like On the Origin of Species) has been “one long argument” concerning what—and how—people should think about living things. Over time, being a “scientist” has required ever more specialized education and tools. To answer the new questions the invention of new instruments was required. New technologies of observation created new ways of knowing. New ways of knowing led to more questions. The cycle is seemingly never-ending. By the 20th Century, it was clear that nobody could know everything. Many would argue that the era of small-scale, independent research is over, while others call for more people to participate in “citizen science”. You have seen examples of “bigger” and “smaller” life science. Is one better than the other, or are they just needed at different times, for different things? We are not going to decide. You are! Your assignment: Based on information presented in weeks 13-15 (Biochemistry, Ecology and Big Science), and considering what you learned early in the semester by reading The Half Life of Facts, decide whether “Big” biology seems better than, worse than, or just different from the kind of life science research done prior to the 1940s. Your response should be in a typical essay format. Your response should be between 750-1000 words. You are only allowed to cite classroom material, no googling for new sources. You have everything you need in the past 15 weeks of reading and material. Please use APA or MLA style citations (in-text and works cited page required). Please check the rubric for grading info. If you do not read the rubric, you will not get 100%.
