PICK A PASSAGE
The passage should be AT LEAST ONE PARAGRAPH in length. You may use the Micah, John, or Ephesians passage that you completed for your SIM assignment and expand on it further.
Prayerfully approach the passages as you read and re-read the passage in the broader context (3 chapters before, 3 chapters after), at least 3 times before writing your paper. This is the first step of lectio divina. Be mindful of questions that arise from your reading.
Place the Scripture reference at the top of the first page of your project.
There is no need to include the entire Scripture passage in the body of your text.
IDENTIFY THE GENRE and/or SUB-GENRE
Use Russell as a resource. Fee and Stuart’s Reading the Bible for All Its Worth is also acceptable.
Identify and give a brief description of the genre.
Identify the principles of interpretation unique to this genre with a brief explanation or description of each.
Identify the sub-genre, if applicable: i.e., a parable (sub-genre) in a Gospel (genre).
IDENTIFY THE AUTHOR’S OVERALL PURPOSE FOR WRITING
Who is the author? Give a brief bio.
Why is the author writing this text? Identify the theme(s) of the book.
When was it written? What’s going on during this time?
How does the passage fit into the author’s overall purpose?
How does the passage fit into the immediate context?
How does the passage fit into the historical background of that part of Bible?
IDENTIFY THE AUDIENCE
Who are they? Who were the listeners or recipients of the writing?
How does the historical background help us understand their circumstance?
How does the passage address their circumstance?
How would they have understood the passage when it was read or read to them?
WORK THROUGH THE PASSAGE
State briefly, the Big Idea of the passage.
Work through the passage verse by verse. This will be the most developed section. There should be evidence of your applying the principles of interpretation.

Identify words and concepts that the author uses in the passage that are unique/common/repeated. (A concordance would be useful here). How is this important to the interpretation of the passage?
Identify the author’s intended application.
Summarize your interpretation. Give a summary statement.
APPLICATION
AFTER examining the Historical Backdrop, Genre, Authorial Purpose and Audience of the passage, spend 30 minutes exercising the other steps of lectio divina as you meditate, pray, and seek to live out your findings on the passage’s meaning, importance and significance.
B. Integrate what you have learned into a contemporary context.
C. Identify and discuss the universal principles and legitimate applications that can be made
for:
Your own personal growth and spiritual formation
Growth in the body of Christ (Church)
Application to the world and the needs of those who do not know the Lord.
D. To complete your project, spend some time in thought and write a half page evaluation,
reflecting on your efforts, challenges, surprises, rewards, etc. encountered in writing this
paper. This is not included as part of the 8-page requirement.
FOOTNOTES and BIBLIOGRAPHY – Required
