Question Three: As you obviously realize, during the ongoing pandemic, public health authorities have repeatedly warned people to keep a safe space between themselves and others (practice social distancing). Do you think that these warnings will have a long term impact on the people who hear them day after day? Even after the virus has run its course, will people be leery of too much togetherness?
Will their anxieties make the New Urbanism which promotes social cohesiveness and compactness less appealing to people than might otherwise be the case? Will they begin to long for the space that suburbs might afford them, with the New Urbanism being too dangerous for their tastes?
NYC has been labeled the epicenter of the virus. Horror stories about the number of people in that city who have contracted the virus have filled headlines and computer screens. After hearing all of these reports will people be nervous to approach that urban center and the New Urbanism neighborhoods that have long been considered hip in the extreme? Will NYC be less likely to sparkle as being the ultimate go to places?

The New Urbanism represents an effort to replicate the communities where immigrants lived and worked after they first came to this country between 1890 -1920. Yet, no matter how extensively the principles that direct this model – multi-use structures, compactness, walkability – are dissected and analyzed, the “New Urbanism” still remains a tricky term to define.
And there is a good reason for that ambiguity. This model has become hip and trendy and developers want to mold it into a form they can market profitably. Some developers have attempted to follow the New Urbanism model as they create communities (from scratch) that are “perfect” in every conceivable way. A prime example is Celebration, Florida which was constructed by the Disney Corporation.
Other business interests, meanwhile, have sought to develop New Urbanism communities within already existing cities. Often, they have situated them in the exact same locales where immigrants made their homes during previous decades, driving up housing prices in these neighborhoods as they reinvented them. The NYC’s Lower East Side
represents a prime example of this process coming into play.
Despite the fact that the New Urbanism might come in a myriad of shapes and sizes one thing seems certain. The selling points utilized in marketing New Urbanism communities are quite different than are those used in marketing suburban communities.
The latter are marketed as featuring large lots and plenty of privacy – paint your own castle – plus ready access to freeways that will take you wherever you might want to go. New Urbanism communities, on the other hand, are credited with offering more adventure an energy than do suburbs.
These urban pioneers, as they are sometimes called, can live car free, as they walk to work and to play. Parks and other public places provide a welcomed venue where they can not only socialize with a diverse group of residents but also enjoy open spaces within the confines of a vibrant city. Increased police vigilance keeps them safe.
