Spring 2006, Johns Hopkins Medicine embarked on a culture change in the areas of diversity and inclusion. The institution took on a much broader approach than a hospital policy change. After review of the full annual report (especially the letter presented by Dr. Paul Rathman, Dean of the Medical Faculty and Ronald Peterson, President of John Hopkins Hospital and Health system) why do you think the agency chose a culture change vs. a hospital policy on diversity and inclusion?
After review of the Diversity Annual Report 2017, select two different areas from Employees, Patients, Research, Community and Economic Opportunities and reflect on if you feel the health care organization is making progress towards a culture of diversity and one of the core values of “diversity and inclusion – be open, embrace and value different backgrounds, opinions and experiences”. If yes, provide example of how they are making progress. If no, provide examples of how they may move forward.
Indicate the diversity videos you have watched and comment on how the video helped to clarify topics discussed in the course. Be sure to return to module learning objectives to answer this question and use approximately 500 words to complete this answer.
3. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (about Half page)
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.
