Requirements:
Components of the Researched Argument: For this assignment, you should include some very specific information in a structure that suits the conventions of your field and ultimately includes the following categories:
• Your thesis statement must articulate a clear point of view—you will need to take a side in a debate and argue for that position.
• You must use at least seven sources in this essay: 4 articles should be scholarly research articles; 2 sources should be books from the NVCC library, and 1 source should be a reliable online source (Wikipedia does not count).
• The Problem
Your central research question should be clear here, whether phrased as a question
or not.
Answer the question: What problem do I want to address or what question(s) do I want to answer? Elaborate on the different variables of your problem and explain their relationships.
• Background to the Problem
This is essentially the narration (statement of facts) section of the Classical Argument; you should strive to show the relevance of your research to other research that has been done. Answer the following questions to set up the stakes: What prompted your interest in this topic? Why is this problem or question important? Who else has worked on this or similar problems? What methods were used? What were the results or conclusions of previous research? How is your thesis different or unique?
• Convincing Argument for your Position
This is similar to the confirmation (proof of your case) section of the Classical Argument. You need to convince readers that your position on the argument, or your solution, is feasible, and that it is the best way to solve the problem. Implement the rhetorical argument strategies you have learned: ethos, pathos, and logos (GASCAP) in order to make your solution as persuasive as possible. Always keep audience and purpose in mind.
• Anticipate Questions
This is similar to the refutation (discredit opposing views) section of the Classical Argument. You will need to consider any questions and/or counterarguments readers may have about your proposal – and to show how its advantages outweigh any disadvantages. Remember, if done well, this can be the strongest part of an argument; show the audience that you have anticipated potential opposition and objections, and that you have an answer for them. The Q&A portion of your oral presentations will help you to strengthen this section.
• Bibliography (Works Cited or Reference List)
You may find that some of your sources have changed and/or that you have added more sources since your Annotated Bibliography Project. Regardless, you must include a full bibliography with your final draft. You do not need to include annotations at the end, but I must see your full list of references in whatever citation format you choose (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
