Architecture contextual studies final submission

Regardless of the scale of the project, architecture has an indissoluble relation with the culture in which it is produced, and this implies a relation with politics, sociology, philosophy, economics, technology, and other factors, which may be more or less explicit. For this submission, you are asked to use analysis and reflection on the feedback you have received for your previously submitted essay, in order to improve. You are also invited to make comments about the contemporary setting, or enduring concerns which span the historical past and the present day. Again, you are expected to us primary & secondary research, observation and presentation skills to explore the connections between architecture, cultural context and ideals. For your last essay, a primary observation of buildings allowed you to focus on a critique of architecture as something that you can address and discuss directly – rather than as an idea in the abstract. You were asked to share visual and primary research in a set of virtual presentations (link). In the revised version of your essay, you may also connect your discussion from historical research to a contemporary or twentieth century context, in preparation for our focus on that period in Stage Two.

This project has four core objectives:

• Develop your ability to reflect on your own critical thinking and writing, assimilating comments and guidance from your tutors • Develop your confidence in using images and text critically, and considering the visual presentation of written works • Develop your ability to use proper academic research and referencing skills, and demonstrating this capacity with full and proper citations, bibliography and captions. • Provide the opportunity to improve your grade attainment – last but most promising!
