A literary research paper is an essay that uses a critical approach to interpret a work and supports that interpretation with research. For this essay, you will be analyzing and interpreting just like in your previous essay/writings/responses. The only difference is you will deliberately use critical approaches. Your paper will use the same bibliographies (not annotated paragraphs) used to create the annotated bibliography. The thesis statement should be based on the sources used in the bibliography submission. These may come from either the library or the Internet but they should be credible (no SparkNotes, Wikipedia, etc.). Paper should be:
• MLA format (see MLA guidelines for appropriate headings, numbering etc.)
• 4-5 pages in length (excluding works cited page)
• Double-spaced
• 11-12 font size
• Times new roman, Ariel, or Courier new font style
• 3-5 sources ON WORKSCITED PAGE AT THE END OF PAPER – can use same sources from Annot. Bib. To complete both in-text citations and works cited page – COMPLETE IN ABC ORDER ON WORKS CITED PAGE
• Include in-text citations (at min. 5) within the paper from sources
DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Print a paper from the Internet and submit;
2. Get a friend’s paper submitted at a previous school/college;
3. Copy and paste from different sites (words/sentences/paragraphs will not be coherent)
4. Use Wikipedia and/or Spark Notes (not credible)
DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Write/ type draft prior to final draft submission
2. Use online resources provided by Albany State University (Galileo)
3. Contact me via remind or email if you have questions
Research Paper Steps:
1. Select Your Topic
• Check to see if sources are available
• Develop a preliminary thesis/hypothesis/outline – broaden if needed
2. Search for Sources
• Read over sources from annotated bibliography (if there are additions, add them)
• If possible, create the bibliography page first from the annotated bibliography already created.
3. Take Notes (on primary and secondary sources)
• Evaluate sources
• Paraphrase, summarize, quote sources clearly (avoid plagiarism)
• Write personal notes on what you will pull from primary and secondary sources
4. Integrate Your Information into a Draft
• Add research
• Blend in research sources smoothly
• Compose in-text citations and Bibliography (if not completed)
6. Revise
• Check content
• Check structure
7. Prepare the Final Draft
• Format
• Proofread
