In doing so, keep the following questions in mind:•What was the status of the civil rights movement at the time King wrote this document? •Who was the intended audience for King’s letter?•What arguments does King make in the letter regarding the tactics and the progress of the Civil Rights movement?General Requirements:•Papers must include a cover page with your name, title of the paper, course name and number, year and semester (History 1746 91, US History Since 1865, Spring 2020). •Papers must be created with a word processing software package (i.e., Microsoft Word).•Papers should be between 1250 and 1500 words (not including title page, footnotes). This is a 4-to -5-page paper if formatted according to the instructions in the following bullet point.•Papers must be double-spaced, using 12-point Times font and 1” margins.Structure:Your paper should begin with an introductory paragraph that briefly introducing Dr. King and his letter. The end of the paragraph should present a thesis statement, concisely stating why you believe Dr. King’s letter was important to the Civil Rights Movement. While there is more than one way to effectively organize your paper, the body of should include the following components: •Historical context – Several paragraphs explaining the bigger picture in which King wrote the letter. Provide a general overview of King’s biography and describe the Civil Rights Movement as it stood in April of 1963. Explain also what had occurred in Birmingham that led to King’s incarceration and his authorship of the letter.•Analysis – Document Description – Several paragraphs analyzing King’s argument presented in the letter. Explain who is he writing the letter to and clearly identify and explain his arguments. Remember to provide evidence here to support your points. Quoting sections of King’s letter and then providing analytical commentary is an effective approach in this section of your paper.•Analysis – Historical Significance – Several paragraphs analyzing the effect the document had on the Civil Rights Movement. How did King’s letter help clarify and shape the civil rights movement moving forward? •Conclusions – Be certain to include a clear concluding paragraph that summarizes your thesis. You can also use your conclusion to make general references beyond but connected to the scope of your paper. For example, a mention of King’s work with the Civil Rights Movement after April of 1963, or some crowning achievements of the movement (i.e., the March on Washington and/or the Civil Rights Act of 1964).
