You will work on this project throughout the quarter, including during section, and each component will receive a grade. You must complete each stage of the assignment before you turn in the next one to earn a passing grade in the course.
Why this a useful FemSt 20 assignment? In Feminist Studies, other social science disciplines and humanities disciplines, scholars analyze media, texts, and lived experience of particular significance to them personally and politically. Analyzing means taking concepts and applying them to things to get a deeper meaning from a particular disciplinary perspective. By working on this assignment throughout the quarter in stages, you will focus on a piece of media and get feedback from your TA and peers at different stages of writing. You will make revisions to drafts and enhance your understanding of how to analyze a piece of media in connection to a threshold concept and referring to at least 2 course readings (the textbook can count as one). You will give peers comments on their papers, and participate in a collaborative research and learning community.
Stage 1: Choose, analyze, and describe the piece of media in detail that assumes your TA does not know this piece of media and needs you to tell them all about it. Explain why you have selected this piece of media and how you will read it using one of the course’s threshold concepts as a lens (see textbook). Describe the threshold concept you are using as if you are writing to another classmate, and explain why you are drawn to this threshold concept (TC) as a lens for analyzing your media object. This assignment will be a minimum of 600 words (double-spaced), and should include your thesis statement. Remember: you must complete all assignments to pass the course. This assignment is worth 10 points, and you will receive comments from your TA.
