For this assignment, it is time for you to put story and scholarship together by writing an essay that analyzes one of the stories (Hayes, Baca, or Tan) by applying scholarly concepts and definitions from a scholarly article (either Anyon or Brandt). The goal of this paper is to help you understand that while literacy narratives may be unique to each person, the scholarship on literacy can help readers/writers analyze individual experiences. The process of analysis gives you an opportunity to practice summarizing, synthesizing, citing, and argumentation – all highly prized in both academic and professional spheres
*Please note that other students will be reading your essay during the peer review.
Mechanics:
Your narrative should include the following:
A title that focuses attention on a main idea
An introduction that enters an ongoing conversation and that creates a sense of purpose and connection to audience
An interpretation of the narrative’s meaning (Hayes, Baca, or Tan) that summarizes a concept or concepts from a scholarly article (either Anyon or Brandt) to help explain why the story is meaningful and how it applies to an interpretation of literacy
A supporting argument that explains and gives reasons for why the story is meaningful for the audience
Utilize at least three (3) direct quotations from the article and or narrative in your essay. Quotations must be no longer than 40 words; they should be used to support the points
you are making, not to fill up the bulk of your word count. Quotations must be formatted in APA.
A conclusion that emphasizes why the story is important and that contributes to the ongoing conversation about literacy
Format:
Please use APA formatting throughout.
