Literary Analysis: The Novel
an Essay on Reservation Blues
Due dates: Choice of topics and preliminary thesis statement: 5/21 Draft: 5/26 Essay due, at least 4 pages with in-text citations PLUS Works Cited, 5/31. PLEASE NOTE: I CAN ACCEPT NO LATE ESSAYS—NO EXCEPTIONS.
Read: Reservation Blues, by Sherman Alexie
For our final essay, I would like you to write a research paper on a particular aspect of Sherman Alexie’s Reservation Blues. I will expect standard essay format: an introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. I expect that any research you use will be properly cited, both in-text and in a Works Cited page. This essay is NOT about summarizing the book or taking a surface interpretation; it’s about taking one aspect of the book and examining it thoroughly, looking at it through your own viewpoint and also through the research material that you find to back up your viewpoint.
Choose one of the following:
–Music and its role in the story
–The Indian Reservation and its role in the story
–Magic and the supernatural and its role in the story
–Relationships between men and women in the story
–Relationships between the main characters in the story
–Any other aspect of the novel that you find interesting
Research material: I prefer that you use LIBRARY DATABASES as your research material for the most part. Library Databases contain magazine, newspaper, and journal articles; they also link to e-books. You must have at least THREE (3) sources for your essay in addition to the novel. You may use reference texts from the library or other works of literary criticism, but you MAY NOT use websites outside of the databases that I have not OK’d.
The best way to start is to read as much of the novel as you can right now, and focus on what aspect of the novel interests you personally. I want a variety of essays for this class; I don’t want students to copy ideas from other students. I cannot accept any essays that I have not seen drafts of first; drafts must include in-text citation. Most of all, have fun with the novel! Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb to make your points—that’s the fun of a literary analysis!
